Regulations

Ballast Water Regulation.

The shipping industry is faced with an increasing number of environmental regulations such as those aimed at reducing the risk from the transport of aquatic organisms beyond their natural ranges.

A ship’s ballast water may contain over 7000 different species, some of these may be harmful, non-native and possibly invasive with the potential to adversely affect infrastructure and ecosystems including the possibility of spreading diseases which could affect plants, humans and other animals. The cost to businesses, economies and livelihoods is significant and, together with climate change, it is recognised as one of the most significant environmental issues that we face.
